Victim and Perpetrator as Outsiders

The murder of Freudenheim took place in relatively quiet part of north Berlin. Heinrich-Roller-Straße lay in the southernmost part of Prenzlauer Berg, northeast of Alexanderplatz between Prenzlauer Allee and Greifswalder Straße. House number 19 was a large, three-courtyard house at the corner of Heinrich-Roller-Straße and Winsstraße. Across the street from Freudenheim’s apartment, along the south side of the street, was a cemetery.

Socially, the neighborhood was fairly typical of Prenzlauer Berg, with a population that was roughly half working class and 30 percent white collar.27 Freudenheim himself was a retired shopkeeper, and several of his neighbors were also pensioners. Among the neighbors who gave statements as witnesses, there was a vertical-blind maker who at one time employed one of his neighbors, an unskilled temporary worker; a telegraph assistant; an elevator operator; a waiter; a typesetter; and a mechanic. In addition, there were three house porters, a milk shopkeeper, and a barber who lived in the area. While several of his neighbors were affected by unemployment, there was nonetheless a mix of skilled workers, white-collar workers, and industrial workers in the area. In terms of social composition, the Heinrich-Roller-Straße neighborhood stood in between the grinding poverty of Grossmann’s “crime district” in East Berlin and the comfortable respectability of Hilde Zäpernick’s New Westend.
